Maldonado uses Hollywood killing to raise money

John Former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado holds a news conference to voice opposition (Don Bartletti, Los Angeles) The stabbing death of a woman who attempted to take photographs of the homeless on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame is being seized by a potential candidate for governor — even if the crime doesn’t fit his campaign. Abel Maldonado, championing a ballot initiative to roll back Gov. Jerry Brown’s prison realignment program, on Thursday circulated material asking for money to “stand against Brown and his dangerous policies.” The solicitation cites the alleged killer of Christine Calderon, stabbed to death June 18 after she refused to pay a group of homeless men for a photograph she had snapped of them. “Just last week Dustin James Kinnear, who was released early under AB109, stabbed and killed an innocent woman in Hollywood,” Maldonado’s missive states.

Hollywood Park traditions prepare to find new homes

Santa Anitas George Haines said the Hollywood Gold Cup is not the only Hollywood Park race his track is looking at. There is also the chance that some of Hollywoods fall stakes from its annual abbreviated meet might land at Del Mar. In 2014-15, the dates for Del Mars newly conceived second meet overlap in part with the fall dates that Hollywood Park used to have. Although Hollywoods fall meet came after the Breeders Cup, the track managed to minimize the ennui. Hollywood assembled a fall festival of graded stakes races, and ran a pair of Grade 1 stakes for 2-year-olds the CashCall Futurity and the Starlet. Wed like to restore as many of those Hollywood stakes as we can, said Tom Robbins, executive vice president for racing at Del Mar.

Hollywood Remembers Top Stylist Annabel Tollman, Dead at 39

“Every party, every dinner, every gathering was better when she was in the mix. Funny, gorgeous, stylish (obviously), and so much fun, with a knowing and charming and sometimes naughty twinkle in her eyes. Every fashion party and glittery gathering will now be missing her special spark.” In addition to appearing on THR’s inaugural 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood List, Tollman also worked with the magazine on a May 18, 2012, cover and photo spread featuring Marion Cotillard.  Michael Flutie, who managed Tollman’s styling and budding on-camera career for the past seven years, tells THR he and the stylist had just wrapped a pilot — called Style Friends — for presentation to TV networks. “She was able to really articulate her passion for clothes.

From a news perspective, probably the biggest new development from the event is  Time Warner’s announcement of a partnership to invest in Chinese media companies. ( company announcement ) The partnership was announced by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who was attending the forum alongside DreamWorks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg and Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. Disney (NYSE: DIS) chief Robert Iger was also in China this week, though it was unclear if he was attending the Fortune event in Chengdu. There wasn’t a lot of detail in the new Time Warner announcement, with no mention of how much money the partners will put into the new fund. But what’s most interesting is Time Warner’s choice of partner, a company called China Media Capital (CMC). CMC itself is a joint venture between the well-connected Shanghai Media Group (SMG), China’s second largest media company and a far more nimble player than the stodgy industry leader CCTV.

Hollywood-China Love Affair On The Red Carpet At Chengdu Forum

That describes “Fathers at a Game,” written by Trey Nichols and directed by Vesna Hocevar at the East Theatre at the Complex in conjunction with the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The story takes place on a bare stage. The backdrop consists of chevron-shaped fabric that serves as a screen for the projection of some of the football played down on the field. Its shape suggests perspectival depth, as if the stadium were a large oval. It also suggests the V-shapes on the sleeve of a soldier’s uniform that describes the man’s rank or length of service, of which more later. The production heaps conflict upon conflict.
