Inside the Crash The al-Qaeda connected Sunni militant group – the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – has captured key towns in Iraq, including Baiji where the country’s biggest oil refinery is located. Importantly, Iraq is OPEC’s second biggest crude oil producer, and the regional unrest led to widespread panic among investors and the resultant crash in the Middle East stock markets. What’s With This ‘obama Is Backing Elizabeth Warren Over Hillary’ Story? – Yahoo News

Edward Klein writes: Publicly, Obama has remained noncommittal on the 2016 race, but privately he worries that Clinton would undo and undermine many of his policies. Theres also a personal animosity, especially with Bill Clinton, that dates from their tough race six years ago.” I would say the first red flag here is that Obama, despite having initially campaigned from the left, has governed (to thefrustrationof some) largely from the center. This is where Hillary perches. This idea that a Clinton presidency would “undo and undermine” the president’s policies just seems silly. However, the first real red flag seems to be the author himself, who has taken some artistic license in writing about the Clintons before. Here’s Paul Janensch on Klein’s bookThe Truth About Hillary.

Obama Takes Aim at the Heart of Wall Street: Bonuses – Businessweek

Right now, if you are in one of the big banks, the profit center is the trading desk, and you can generate a huge amount of bonuses by making some big bets; you will be rewarded on the upside. If you make a really bad bet, a lot of times youve already banked all your bonuses. You might end up leaving the shop, but in the meantime everybody else is left holding the bag. Now what weve been able to do is to try to prevent taxpayers from being the folks who are left holding the bag. But its still not a real efficient way for us to run a financial system.

Obama, Germany’s Merkel consult on Ukraine – Yahoo News

Secretary of State John Kerry dismissed the op-ed with this: This is the man who took us into Iraq saying this? Please. Even some within the Republican establishment have criticized Cheney. Rand Paul, a presumptive GOP presidential candidate in 2016, said that Cheney was to blame for the violence in Iraq, not Obama. Megyn Kelly, a host of Fox News, slammed Cheney for the suggestions made in The Journal piece. Time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well in Iraq, sir. You said there was no doubt Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. You said we would be greeted as liberators, Kelly said to Cheney .

The Obama Administration’s “Gainful Employment” Regulations Discriminate against the Private Sector in Higher Education – Forbes

The regulations have come under criticism from the GOP and others, resulting in debates that edged on comical, including if pizza sauce is a vegetable. Now, a new bill to fund the Department of Agriculture also comes with provision to allow districts to take a pass on the nutritional standards for one year, a measure First Lady Obama says will undermine the 2010 act. Michelle Obama said in an op-ed piece for the New York Times, Remember a few years ago when Congress declared that the sauce on a slice of pizza should count as a vegetable in school lunches? You dont have to be a nutritionist to know that this doesnt make much sense. Yet were seeing the same thing happening again with these new efforts to lower nutrition standards in our schools.

Michelle Obama Continues To Fight For Healthier School Lunches, Despite Critics

This fight illustrates why government intervention is so corrupting. I dont like any federal subsidies to education, free whether for K-12 or for higher education. I dont care whether the subsidies are for government schools, non-profit private schools, or for-profit private schools. So I would like to cut off loans, grants, and other funds to for-profit schools, but that should happen at the same time that handouts also are being eliminated for other types of schools (Tim Carney has a very good explanation of why there are no good guys in this fight). Let me close with an analogy.

To me, 2011-2012s low numbers show that, though the S&P 500 and other indices are hitting all-time highs, investor confidence still hasnt recovered from the dot.com bubble and the financial crisis. As I wrote here late last year, surveys showed a steep decline in the percentage of Americans who said they owned stocks or stock mutual funds. But there are big structural changes as well, Lam told me. First is the alternative asset revolution, pioneered by David Swensen at Yale University and Jack Meyer at Harvard. University endowments and other asset managers have drastically reduced their holdings in traditional stocks and bonds, investing instead in such formerly exotic asset classes as private equity, hedge funds and timber land.
