Obama To Press For Action On Transportation Funds – Abc News

The report also said states and local governments were well positioned now to undertake capital projects because construction is cheaper and because the cost of borrowing through municipal bonds is at a historic low. Obama will discuss the issue during remarks Tuesday at a facility in Virginia that tests new technologies for highway transportation. He’ll also promote the need to invest in the nation’s infrastructure Thursday during a trip to Delaware, where he’ll announce an initiative to increase private sector investment. The administration has warned that by early August the fund will no longer have enough money to cover promised aid to states, and the government will begin to stretch out payments. States have been told to expect a 28 percent reduction in aid on average. The White House argues that the United States has fallen behind other major economies in its spending for transportation needs.

Obama seeks to ease Germany’s concerns on spying – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

Seeking to play down the growing rift, the White House said only that Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had “exchanged views on U.S.-German intelligence cooperation” and that Obama had said he’d stay in close touch about intelligence cooperation going forward. The White House said the rest of the call focused on other global conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. Still, the call comes amid fresh strains in an espionage dispute that reached a new low last week when Germany demanded that the CIA station chief in Berlin leave the country. That move followed published accounts alleging that American intelligence recruited two Germans to spy for Washington: a man who worked at Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, and a defense ministry employee. The last known conversation between Obama and Merkel was on July 3, but that call took place before German officials had arrested the first alleged U.S.

Obama ‘encouraged’ by Egypt ceasefire plan | TheHill

Obama said no country can accept rockets fired indiscriminately at its citizens, and condemned the inexcusable attacks from Hamas. Obama welcomes Egypt’s ceasefire plan for Gaza – Yahoo News

At an Iftar dinner marking the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan, Obama also said Israel had a right to defend itself against “inexcusable” rocket attacks but described the deaths of Palestinian civilians in the conflict as a “tragedy.” Obama spoke after Egypt said a ceasefire should start on Tuesday and that it was willing to host high-level Israeli and Palestinian delegations for talks after a truce went into effect. Obama said Washington’s priority was to restore a 2012 ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after a previous explosion of violence. “We are encouraged that Egypt has made a proposal to accomplish this goal that we hope can restore the calm that we are seeking,” Obama said in the State Dining Room of the White House. “The pictures that we are seeing in Gaza and in Israel are heart wrenching,” he added. “I will say very clearly, no country can accept rockets fired indiscriminately at civilians. We have been very clear — Israel has a right to defend itself against what I consider to be inexcusable attacks from Hamas.” “At the same time …

Obama, GOP Get Negative Ratings On Handling Of Border Crisis

In a letter to Congress last week, Obama said the funding would be used for a number of purposes, including improving border security, building additional detention facilities, and sending more immigration judges to speed up deportation proceedings. Despite the support for the funding request, the poll found that 58 percent of Americans generally disapprove of the way Obama is handling the border crisis. Just 33 percent approve. Perhaps not surprisingly, Obama gets particularly negative ratings from the GOP, as 85 percent of Republicans disapprove of the president’s handling of the border crisis. Sixty percent of Independents also disapprove of Obama’s handling of the crisis, while 57 percent of Democrats approve. Obama is not alone in getting low marks on his handling of the crisis, however, as most Americans also disapprove of the way Congressional Republicans are handling the issue.
